Activity:
Scatter Square Dance

Discussion:
The objective of this activity is to perform basic square dance moves in a scatter formation.  These will help us get ready for a square formation.  Raise your hand if you have ever done or seen a square dance.  Who can tell me what they think a square dance is?  Just like with other dances, square dances have specific moves you do to the music, however, in square dancing there is a person named a "caller" to call out the moves for you.  So let's learn some of these moves.  Some are going to be individual moves by yourself.  Some will be partner moves with a friend.  Everyone stand up and spread out.

First, we'll learn a few moves and then put them to music.  We will add more when you get comfortable with these:
a:  Hit the lonesome trail:  walk/strut around the dance area
b:  Swing your partner:  hook right elbows and turn in place
c:  Honor your partner:  face your partner and bow/curtsy to them
d:  Do Sa Do:  with arms crossed in front, face your partner.  Walk forward passing right shoulder to right shoulder.  When back to back, take one step to the right and walk backwards passing left shoulder to left shoulder.

Now let's put these to music and see how we do. (American Folk Dance Medley:  SPARK 3-6 CD)
*Cues before/during music
Keep listening for the next call
Find a new partner each time
Add a 3rd to your pair if someone is alone

Extension:
*Add more calls
Examples:
Pony Express - do the step in "double time"
Promenade - join both hands and walk counterclockwise around dance area
Allemande L/R:  with L/R hand, grab L/R forearm, turn clockwise circle in place
*Students have written assignment to come up with their own original calls
*Students have written assignment to put their own original calls and learned calls into a square dance.
