Caddo Pottery

Objective: Students will learn about Caddo Indian pottery and create their own piece of pottery.

Duration of lesson: 3 days

 

Anticipatory Question: 
What do you know about native indian pottery and it's uses? 

Do you know the steps in making a piece of pottery?

 

Materials/Resources:  Prometheon board, video of step-by-step instructions on pottery making, text from link:( http://www.ehow.com/about_4576901_caddo-pottery.html ) , examples of Caddo pottery, student question sheet, clay, Caddo music clip

 

Vocabulary Terms: Caddo Indians, utilitarian pottery, fine pottery, coil method, pinch method, vessel

 

Activities:

 

1. Open discussion is used in class as to what the students know about native Indian pottery and what it might have been used for.  Answers are written on the board. 

 

2. Students are given text to read regarding Caddoan pottery and shown images on the Prometheon board of various pictures of pottery, one type utilitarian and one type fine pottery.

 

3.  Pass out question sheet for students to answer regarding the text they just read and the images on the board.

 

4. After student work sheets are handed in a discussion over what they have just learned is held and the correct answers are given.

 

5. A short discussion is held on how students think pottery is made.  Their answers are listed on the board.

 

6. Both slideshows on how to create a pinch pot and how to use the coil method are shown.

 

7. Teacher does a demonstration of the two types of pots showing different shapes possible.

 

8. Caddo Indian music is played for the students to be inspired by while working on their pots.

 

9. Student draws on paper a design of a vessel they would like to create.

 

10. Students are reminded of the classroom rules in getting supplies out in an orderly manner.

 

11. Students create their vessels they have drawn using either the pinch method or the coil method. They are instructed to add designs and symbols to the outside of their pots and reminded to include their initials somewhere on their pots.

 

Assessment: Students will submit a question worksheet over Caddoan Pottery and create a piece of pottery.  (Pictures for student use on question worksheet are displayed below.)  A Rubric will be provided for both assignments.

Extension: Upon completion of drying the pots the students will then glaze their pots.
